A Perfect Wayanad Getaway

If you’re dreaming of a scenic road trip filled with greenery, misty hills, and cozy houses nestled in nature, Wayanad is the perfect escape. Our recent trip to Wayanad was all about unwinding in the middle of nature, enjoying a relaxing stay at Upavan Resort, and exploring some of the region’s most stunning attractions. Here's everything you need to know about our trip, from the road journey to breathtaking hikes and serene lakes.

The Road Trip: Ooty to Wayanad by Car
The drive from Ooty to Wayanad is a treat in itself. It takes about 4 to 5 hours (120 km), depending on the route you take. The most scenic (and slightly thrilling) route is via Kalpetta offering mesmerizing valley views. If you’re an adventure lover, this drive is exhilarating!

Once you enter Wayanad, the landscape transforms into rolling tea estates, bustling and winding roads.
We booked Upavan Resort for our stay as it was the holiday home of my company. The resort is nestled among dense trees and plants, giving off a peaceful forest vibe. The cottages are spacious, offering a blend of comfort and nature, with large windows opening up to green views.



What We Loved About Upavan Resort
The Swimming Pool: The resort has a beautiful outdoor pool surrounded by greenery—a perfect place to take a refreshing dip.



Nature Walks: The resort is surrounded by lush foliage, making morning walks a magical experience.



With our comfortable stay sorted, we were ready to explore Wayanad’s gems. Here’s what we visited:
1. Edakkal Caves – A Hike to Prehistoric Wonders


A fascinating archaeological site, Edakkal Caves house prehistoric rock carvings dating back to 6000 BCE. Located at 1,200 meters above sea level, reaching the caves requires a moderate 1.5 km uphill trek. The intricate petroglyphs inside the caves are believed to be the earliest human settlements in South India. The view from the top is breathtaking, making the climb totally worth it!
How to Get There:
Edakkal Caves are about 19 km from Kalpetta. You can drive up to the base point and then start the trek.
Entry Fee:
Adults: ₹50
Foreigners: ₹100
Jeep ride from the parking area: ₹70 per person (optional)
The Hike:

The trek to Edakkal Caves is around 1.5 km uphill, taking about 45 minutes to an hour. It's a moderate climb with steep sections and some rough patches, but totally worth it!
Why Visit?
The caves have prehistoric rock carvings dating back to 6,000 BCE. The view from the top is spectacular, with panoramic sights of Wayanad’s hills and valleys.



2. Pookode Lake – A Serene Escape
Pookode Lake is surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills. It's a perfect spot for boating, a peaceful nature walk, or simply relaxing by the water.

How to Get There:
Pookode Lake is just 5 km from Vythiri making it a quick visit.
Entry Fee:
Adults: ₹40
Children: ₹20
Boating Charges: Starts from ₹100 per person
Why Visit?


This pristine freshwater lake is surrounded by forests. You can enjoy boating, fish spa therapy, and even a small aquarium visit. The walking trail around the lake is perfect for a peaceful stroll.
3. Banasura Sagar Dam – The Largest Earth Dam in India

The largest earthen dam in India, Banasura Sagar Dam is set against the majestic Banasura hills and offers stunning panoramic views of the reservoir and lush greenery. Adventure lovers can enjoy speed boating on the reservoir, while nature enthusiasts can explore nearby trekking trails.

How to Get There:
Banasura Sagar Dam is about 21 km from Upavan Resort and takes about 40 minutes by car.
Entry Fee:
Adults: ₹30
Children: ₹10
Speed Boat Rides: Starts at ₹800 for 4 people


Why Visit?
It is India’s largest earthen dam and offers breathtaking views of the Banasura hills reflecting in the reservoir. You can enjoy speed boating for an adrenaline rush or simply relax by the water.
4. 900 Kandi – Wayanad’s Secret Glass Bridge
A hidden paradise in Wayanad, 900 Kandi is famous for its thrilling glass bridge, offering unobstructed views of the dense forest below. It is accessible via an off-road jeep ride through scenic tea plantations. Adventure seekers can try zip-lining, trekking, and eco-tourism activities here.



How to Get There:
Located 35 km from Kalpetta, 900 Kandi is a bit remote but worth the adventure. You will need a jeep ride from Meppadi (₹150 per person) to reach the glass bridge.
Entry Fee:
₹100 for the glass bridge experience.

The glass bridge offers jaw-dropping views of the dense forests below.
5. Chengerimala – The Less-Crowded Sunset Spot
A less crowded hilltop viewpoint, Chengerimala is perfect for those who love offbeat nature spots. A short trek leads you to breathtaking views of Wayanad’s valleys, tea plantations, and misty landscapes. The place is especially magical during sunrise and sunset.

How to Get There:
Located about 18 km from Upavan Resort, this hilltop offers a peaceful retreat.
Entry Fee:
Adults: ₹100
The Hike:
A 1.5 km hike through steep rocks and forested trails. Moderate difficulty, but worth it for the stunning sunset views.
Why Visit?

Unlike the touristy spots, this place is quiet and untouched. Panoramic views of Wayanad’s valleys Nellarchal reservoir.
6. Honey Museum
An educational and fun stop, the Honey Museum in Wayanad offers insights into traditional beekeeping, honey harvesting, and the medicinal benefits of honey. Visitors can sample and purchase various organic honey varieties, making it a unique experience for families and nature lovers.

How to Get There:
It is 10 km from Upavan Resort, near Meenangadi.
Entry Fee:
₹30 per person
Why Visit?
Learn about Wayanad’s rich honey production and traditional beekeeping methods. Taste organic and medicinal honey varieties straight from the source.

Great for kids and adults alike!
7.En Ooru - Model Tribal Village
En Ooru, translating to "My Village" in Malayalam, is Kerala's first tribal heritage village, situated in Pookode, Wayanad district. This 25-acre village offers visitors an immersive experience into the rich culture, traditions, and lifestyle of Kerala's indigenous tribal communities.


How to get there:
En Ooru is located near Lakkidi, about 5 km from Upavan Resort.
Entry Fee:
Adults (12 years and above) - ₹50
Children (4-12 years) - ₹20.
Why Visit?



The village features traditional tribal huts with hay roofs set against the picturesque backdrop of Wayanad's hills. Managed by tribal communities, En Ooru aims to preserve heritage while enhancing livelihood opportunities for its inhabitants. Visitors can explore various attractions, including a tribal market selling spices and handicrafts, an open-air theatre with a seating capacity of 300, and cafeterias serving authentic ethnic dishes.
Is Wayanad Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or just a break in nature, Wayanad offers it all. From our scenic drive from Ooty and the incredible places we explored, this trip was one for the books.
If you’re planning your own Wayanad road trip, make sure to:

✅ Carry some cash for small entry fees although most centres and shops have UPI.
✅ Book stays in advance, especially during peak season
