Travel Photography Tips for Non-Photographers – Easy Hacks for Great Vacation Shots

I’ll be honest – I’m not the person who carries a fancy DSLR or spends hours adjusting settings. My “travel camera” has mostly been my phone, and my editing skills. Over the years, I’ve learned a few simple tricks that made my vacation photos pop without turning me into a professional photographer. And the best part? You can use them right away—whether you’re in Paris or at your local weekend getaway spot.

1. Chase the Golden Hours

Photos taken in early morning or late afternoon have softer, warmer light that flatters everything—from landscapes to selfies. Midday sun? That’s the villain. It creates harsh shadows and squinty eyes.

Hack: If you’re visiting a popular spot, head there early morning when it’s less crowded—bonus: empty backdrops!

2. Use the Rule of Thirds

Most phones have a grid option—turn it on. Imagine your screen divided into 9 equal squares. Place the subject along these lines or where they intersect. My win: This trick made my shots instantly look more “magazine-worthy” without extra effort.

3. Move Your Feet, Not Just Your Zoom

Instead of pinching in to zoom (which lowers image quality), walk closer to your subject. It adds depth and captures details you’d otherwise miss.

4. Include “Human Scale” for Drama

Want that waterfall to look enormous? Place a person in the frame. Human scale adds perspective and makes the scene more relatable.

5. Frame It Naturally

Look for archways, tree branches, windows, or door frames to naturally “frame” your subject. It guides the viewer’s eye straight to the focus point.

6. Don’t Ignore Candid Moments

Some of my favorite photos weren’t posed—they were me sipping coffee at a street café or laughing at an inside joke. These moments bring life to your travel album.

7. Edit Like a Minimalist

Apps like Snapseed, Lightroom Mobile, or even your phone’s inbuilt editor can brighten shadows and enhance colors—just don’t go overboard. A light touch goes a long way.
